Choose the Right Oil for Your Engine

When it's time to change your vehicle's oil, it's important to choose the right engine oil. Most people have seen numbers like 10W-40 on a bottle of engine oil, but do you know what these numbers mean?

The engine oil numbers are viscosity values. Viscosity is a property that determines how much a fluid resists flow. The number that comes before the 'W' is the oil viscosity at cold temperatures. The second number is the oil viscosity at high temperatures. Low viscosity oils tend to be good in cold weather, since they will move more easily around the engine when it is cold. High viscosity oils tend to be better for hot temperatures, since if the viscosity is too low, it will not properly lubricate the engine.
