Three hours west of the Reno Mazda showroom the longest race on American soil kicked off this past weekend.  The 25 Hours of Thunderhill takes place the first weekend of December every year in Willows, California, and for the 2013 race three Mazda6 diesel racers competed.

Two of the Mazda6 sedans were driven by representatives from brand dealers, while the third was operated by a team from the Mazda North American Operations.

These models used the same 2.2-liter turbodiesel engines that will be available to everyone here in Reno, Nevada soon when the model is released.  This engine powered the racers to 173 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, and used a six-speed manual transmission.

While the engine remained stock, the rest of the features were heavily modified to fit racing specs.  StopTech added better brakes to the three diesel racers, while Enkei and BFGoodrich provided wheels and tires.  ProParts USA supplied numerous parts to better the suspension, including springs, shocks and anti-roll bars.

On the inside, the cabin was heavily modified with the focus being to better safety.  A roll cage, racing seats and a fire suppression system was met by racing data analyzers so the Mazda teams could track the performance at Thunderhill.

The diesel sedan will join our inventory of new Mazda cars in Reno, Nevada sometime in the Spring of next year.  With the same engine as the three racers, the interiors will be more suited for comfort than for racing.
