Mazda gets quite excited when it comes to releasing a new Mazda model. Quality comes first however, which means sometimes a highly anticipated release date has to be bumped back a bit so that additional testing can take place. In this instance, the diesel-powered Mazda6 sedan was scheduled for release before the end of this year, but sales are now slated to begin in April of 2014.
The reason for this delay is because Mazda needs to ensure the diesel model undergoes the proper emissions testing so that it can receive its certification. Despite this minor roadblock, Mazda still strives to become the first Japanese automaker to offer a diesel-powered car within the U.S. It has taken the road less traveled when it comes to improving efficiency and is focusing on this goal rather than delving into the competitive hybrid and electric vehicle markets.
To further explain the situation, Robert Davis, senior vice president of U.S. operations for Mazda North American Operations, states, "I know we had discussed it being in showrooms before the end of the year, and everyone involved in the program is disappointed it will not be, but final certification testing -- the results of which are looking encouraging -- is taking longer than we had initially expected."1
In order to compensate for the delay of the new model, Mazda will be provide dealerships like Tom Dolan's Reno Mazda with 4,000 extra gasoline powered Mazda6 vehicles. These can be expected during the first quarter of 2014. Since sales for the model have increased, the extra supply will be welcomed by many dealerships that are seeing a shortage.
