Rear-end collisions are the most common form of automobile accident in the United States and can cause major damage to your vehicle. Many of the newer cars now come equipped with technology to help you avoid crashes such as forward collision warning and automatic braking systems. But, there are still things you can do to avoid getting into a collision. They include:
- Maintaining a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. Following at a safe distance gives you the ability to safely stop or slow down.
- If you're driving in bad weather you may need to increase your following distance. Driving on slick roads can greatly increase the amount of time you need to slow down or come to a complete stop.
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Scan the road ahead of you and check your mirrors often to see what is going on behind you.
- Be sure to use your turn signals to let other drivers know your intentions. You should also gradually come to a stop instead of stopping abruptly. These actions are an important part of staying safe.
