When Robert Davis, Senior Vice President of U.S Operations for Mazda North American Operations, is asked how often he hears, "When is the next time you're doing an RX?" he laughs.

"Oh, daily."

One of the features that made the original Mazda RX-7, and the later Mazda RX-8, great was the rotary combustion engine. Since 1974, Mazda has been the only car company to use and develop rotary engines, which are much smaller and more powerful than a standard piston internal combustion engine.

The problem is, they aren't very efficient. Mazda's last rotary-powered car was the 2011 Mazda RX-8.

In 2015, the Mazda RX-Vision concept was unveiled at auto shows. Davis says, Rotary is an important part of our history, an important part of our past and will be an important part of our future." As to what the new Mazda RX-Vision means, "It was a signal to the world that we’re serious about it ... It's a styling direction and a technology direction that's important to us."
